30^th Annual Conference Keynote Presentations

James W. Partington, Ph.D., BCBA-D and Michael M. Mueller, Ph.D., BCBA-D, The Assessment of Functional Living Skills, “The AFLS”

In addition to learning language and social interaction skills, individuals of all ages must learn many functional living skills that will allow them to successfully participate in a wide range of home, school and community-based activities. Skills necessary for successful community participation become extremely important as individuals transition from highly-supervised educational settings into community-based work and residential settings.

The newly released Assessment of Functional Living Skills will be discussed in this full-day session. The AFLS reviews over 850 skills in 31 functional skill areas such as traveling in the community, making purchases, seeking assistance as required, preparing meals, participating in household chores, and social and leisure activities. An emphasis will be placed on helping parents, educators and other caregivers identify skills that children need to learn. Additionally, practical and easy-to-implement methods to help children learn these skills will be discussed. A major emphasis will be placed on how to break down tasks into easy-to-teach steps. Through lecture and video, the presenters will demonstrate ways to keep individuals motivated to participate in these lessons and teach how to systematically use and fade prompts to make the learning process as fun and quick as possible.

 

Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete, Living with Autism, facilitated by Mark Roithmayr, President, Autism Speaks Mark Roithmayr will host former NFL quarterback, Rodney Peete, and his wife, Holly Robinson Peete as they share a heartrending, candid look inside their personal journey with autism and provide an inspirational road map that will help families facing similar challenges. Through HollyRod Foundation and their family’s personal experiences, the Peetes have become advocates for consistent and reliable education, outreach and support on both Parkinson’s and autism. In 2010, Rodney published Not My Boy! A Father, a Son, and One Family’s Journey with Autism (Hyperion), and Holly along with her daughter, Ryan Elizabeth published My Brother Charlie (Scholastic).

Mark Mautone, iPads and Autism: Best Practices in the Educational Environment There’s an app for that, but is it the right one for your learner? This keynote presentation will provide comprehensive insight into how to use iPads to educate individuals with autism spectrum disorders in schools and out in the community. Mark will discuss current research on iPads, as well as selection and implementation of iPad applications across various educational domains. With over 18 years of experience in special education, Mark has extensive knowledge in assistive technology that includes adapting and creating individualized curricula using innovative technology. In 2010, he developed ITPADD-Integrated Technology for Persons with Autism and Developmental Disabilities, a technology company that was named after his highly recognized iPhone/iPod touch application.
